Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2027 is Monday, January 18, so the weekend runs Friday the 15th through Monday the 18th. Mt. Baker flags that Monday as a holiday, which puts it on peak pricing — one of only two Mondays all season. But it is a United States holiday and not a Canadian one, and that single fact changes the shape of the weekend more than anything else on this page.
Here is what we could verify today, two weeks before the queue of guests asking about it usually starts.
Is Mt. Baker Ski Area open for MLK weekend?
Almost certainly, and all four days. Mt. Baker’s 2026-27 operations calendar shows the mountain running seven days a week through January, with Monday January 18 boxed as a holiday. Lifts turn 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The only scheduled closures on the whole calendar are midweek days in April.
The caveat that matters at Thanksgiving does not really apply here. Baker has no snowmaking, so the start of its season is a bet on weather — but by mid-January that bet has long since settled. The latest opening we can tie to dated reporting is the 2025-26 season, which went to passholders on December 21, 2025 and to everyone the next day, after Cascadia Daily News reported about 17 inches in 48 hours finally being enough.
The useful way to look at it is the margin — how many days the mountain had already been open to everyone before that season’s MLK Saturday arrived:
| Season | Opened to everyone | MLK Saturday | Days of margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | Dec 22, 2025 | Jan 17, 2026 | 26 |
| 2024-25 | Nov 21, 2024 | Jan 18, 2025 | 58 |
| 2023-24 | Dec 13, 2023 | Jan 13, 2024 | 31 |
| 2022-23 | Nov 18, 2022 | Jan 14, 2023 | 57 |
| 2021-22 | Dec 14, 2021 | Jan 15, 2022 | 32 |
Even the worst of those five left 26 days. That table records opening dates, not a promise that every lift ran every day afterwards, and we have no way to audit mid-January down-days — but the start-of-season question that hangs over a Thanksgiving trip is simply not the same question in the third week of January. The full dated record and its sources are in when does Mt. Baker open.

January backs that up. The ski area’s own snowfall statistics record sixteen Januaries from 2010-11 through 2025-26. The thinnest was 40 inches. The median was 95, the average 118, and the biggest was 294 inches in January 2020.
| January snowfall, last 16 seasons | Inches |
|---|---|
| Biggest (2019-20) | 294 |
| Average | 118 |
| Median | 95 |
| Thinnest (2024-25) | 40 |
The real January risk is not the lifts. It is the road — the same 2025-26 season that opened late also had SR 542 closed east of Glacier by landslide damage, with WSDOT restoring only temporary daily access. We keep the live sources for that on our road conditions page.

What does a lift ticket cost on MLK Day?
$115.42 for an adult on Monday January 18, against $98.80 on an ordinary January Monday — the holiday flag moves that day from off-peak to peak. These are the 2026-27 published rates, checked today, and they exclude Washington’s 8.3% sales tax.
| Ticket | Peak (Fri–Sun + Mon Jan 18) | Off-peak (Tue–Thu Jan 19–21) |
|---|---|---|
| Adult 16-59 | $115.42 | $98.80 |
| Youth 11-15 | $71.10 | $60.94 |
| Child 7-10 | $49.86 | $41.55 |
| Senior 60-69 | $97.88 | $83.10 |
| Super senior 70+ | $68.33 | $58.17 |
Mt. Baker prices nine days as holidays across the whole 2026-27 season, and only two of them are Mondays: January 18 and Presidents’ Day, February 15. Every other Monday from November to March is off-peak. So a family of two adults and two youths pays about $53 more to ski the holiday Monday than the Tuesday after it.
Two rules catch first-timers out, and both work in your favour when you are planning this far ahead. You cannot buy a day ticket in advance — the mountain states it plainly, “Daily Lift Tickets are available for purchase day-of at the ski area only,” and there are no multi-day or digital tickets at all. And there are no parking reservations for day skiing. Nothing about this trip can sell out on you except a bed. We price a whole weekend out in what a Mt. Baker ski trip actually costs.
Rentals follow the same day-of logic. A full-day basic rental package is $66.48 for an adult, $53.55 youth, $46.17 child, and afternoon rentals from noon cannot be reserved online at all. In Glacier, Glacier Ski Shop is still showing only a weekend schedule on its site as of today — Saturday 10–5, Sunday 12–5 — with no winter hours posted yet, so call ahead if your Monday depends on gear from the valley. Our ski rental guide has the full comparison.

Which day of MLK weekend is actually the quietest?
Monday, by a clear margin, and the reason is a border. MLK Day is a United States federal holiday. It is not a holiday in British Columbia — B.C.’s statutory holiday list has nothing in January after New Year’s Day, and Family Day does not arrive until February 15. Vancouver is an hour and a half from these cabins and supplies a real share of Baker’s weekend traffic. On MLK Monday, most of it is at work.
The rental market says the same thing in numbers. We watch the Maple Falls and Glacier market through PriceLabs, and here is the booked share of the surrounding one-to-three-bedroom listings as of this morning, with the market’s median asking rate beside it:
| Night | Booked today | Median market rate |
|---|---|---|
| Thu Jan 14 | 6.3% | $265 |
| Fri Jan 15 | 13.6% | $294 |
| Sat Jan 16 | 18.5% | $291 |
| Sun Jan 17 | 17.6% | $269 |
| Mon Jan 18 (holiday) | 6.2% | $246 |
| Tue Jan 19 | 2.8% | $236 |
The Monday night is already booking at a third of the Saturday’s rate and prices like an ordinary weekday. Read that as a crowd forecast: plenty of people are coming Friday to Sunday and driving home Sunday evening, and comparatively few are staying through. If you want the holiday weekend without the holiday-weekend lot, the move is to ski Sunday and Monday rather than Saturday and Sunday — you pay peak either way on both days, but Monday is the one everyone else gave up.
It is worth being precise about the price side too, because it gets overstated. PriceLabs today flags January 14–17 as a 29.5% market price surge against surrounding dates, the second-largest of the next twelve months after the Christmas week’s 41.3%. On demand it is only the third-largest surge, at 9.7%. These vendor figures are restated every run — the same two windows read 27.1% and a different ranking when we pulled them for Thanksgiving two days ago — so treat them as the shape of the weekend, not a measurement.

What time should you arrive at the ski area?
By 8:00 a.m., or after noon. Mt. Baker’s parking and travel page gives both windows directly: traffic is heaviest “on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays… from about 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM,” and if you cannot make the early arrival, “the next window for best parking availability is after 12:00 PM.”
That page is also where the mountain describes itself as “a mid-sized ski area, with limited parking spaces” whose lots “can sometimes fill up early in the day.” Lift tickets never run out at Baker. Parking is the constraint, there is no overflow lot and no public shuttle up from town, and the non-skiers in your group are competing for the same spaces. The full day-by-day picture for the season is in our 2026-27 crowd calendar.

Sunrise at Glacier on January 16 is 7:56 a.m. and sunset is 4:40 p.m., per the U.S. Naval Observatory. An 8:00 a.m. arrival at the lot means leaving the valley in the dark.

Carry chains. The trigger is the posted sign, not your drivetrain: WSDOT’s winter guidance is blunt that “drivers who fail to install chains when signs are posted risk a $500 fine,” and an all-wheel-drive car is exempt from installing them only while it is carrying a set. The named chain-requirement zone on this highway runs from milepost 22.91, near the Kendall junction, to milepost 57.26 at the end of the road — though the blanket November 1 to April 1 carry-at-all-times rule written into that table applies to vehicles over 10,000 pounds, not to your car. We go through what to buy, where the signs are and what the troopers actually check in our chains and winter driving guide.
What is open in Glacier and Maple Falls over the weekend?
Everything that is normally open — none of the corridor’s handful of kitchens publishes a holiday closure, and none publishes a holiday menu either. Here is what their own pages showed today:
| Place | Where | Posted hours |
|---|---|---|
| Wake ‘n Bakery | Glacier | Winter hours Mon–Thu 7–2, Fri–Sun 7–5 |
| Chair 9 | Glacier | Daily from noon; kitchen to 8 p.m., 9 p.m. Fri–Sat |
| North Fork Brewery | Mt. Baker Hwy, Deming | Open every day, noon–9 p.m. |
| Glacier Ski Shop | Glacier | Sat 10–5, Sun 12–5 (no winter hours posted yet) |
Two standing facts for anyone who has not driven this road before: there is no gas in Glacier, so the last fuel is Maple Falls, and cell service effectively ends around Kendall. Fill up and download your maps before you turn up-valley. The whole list of what exists and what does not is in our services guide for the corridor.

What can you do on the Monday if you are not skiing?
Watch eagles. Mid-January sits in the middle of the Nooksack’s bald eagle season, which runs roughly December through March and peaks on the chum salmon run — it costs nothing, it is at valley elevation so the weather matters less, and it works for people who do not ski. Our Nooksack eagle viewing guide has the pullouts and the timing.
The other two January options are both below the ski area. Snowshoeing near Mt. Baker covers the Salmon Ridge trails and what a Sno-Park permit involves, and sledding near Mt. Baker explains where you can actually go, which is not inside the ski area boundary.

How far ahead should you book a cabin for MLK weekend?
By mid-December, on the evidence we have — though that evidence is thin and we would rather say so. Across 403 completed stays our own MLK-weekend bookings came in at a median of 36 days ahead, but there were only four of them, which is a direction rather than a number. The full breakdown by season and length of stay is in how far ahead you need to book a Mt. Baker cabin.
The market view adds useful context. January 2027 across the surrounding listings is 8% booked today against 6% at the same point last year, and last January finished at 45%. So roughly four out of five beds in this valley are still unsold for the month — but the MLK nights are already running two to three times ahead of the rest of it. That gap is the thing to act on, not the headline percentage.
One more date to keep off your calendar if quiet is what you want: the Beacon Rally, the ski area’s free avalanche-beacon event, is Saturday January 9 — the weekend before. Nothing is scheduled on the mountain for MLK weekend itself.
Where to stay for MLK weekend
Both of our cabins are on the right side of the one road in, which on a holiday weekend is most of the argument.
The Black Cedar is a 3-bedroom A-frame near Glacier sleeping 6, about 40 minutes from the ski area — the closest of the two to a 7:30 a.m. departure. It has a cedar barrel sauna, a hot tub, an outdoor shower and a free espresso bar, which covers both ends of a short January day.
The Little Red Cabin is a renovated 2-bedroom in Maple Falls sleeping 4, 45 minutes from the lifts and 15 from Glacier, with a private hot tub, a fire pit and a trail up Red Mountain out the back. Maple Falls is the last gas, which on a four-day weekend is worth more than the extra quarter hour costs you.
Both are ours, both are booked direct at our best rate, and both are strictly no-pets. If you are weighing the two towns against each other, our Mt. Baker lodging guide lays out every option on this highway, including the ones that are not us.
Last verified: 2026-10-09. The 2026-27 operations calendar, lift ticket rates, basic rental rates, event calendar, parking and travel page, mountain info FAQ and snowfall statistics were each read from Mt. Baker Ski Area’s own pages today; the January holiday box was read off the calendar image itself. Federal holiday dates come from OPM and B.C.’s from the provincial government. Restaurant and shop hours come from each business’s own hours page, checked today; holiday-specific hours are not published this far out and are deliberately not stated here. Sunrise and sunset are U.S. Naval Observatory figures for Glacier. Market occupancy and rate figures are PriceLabs neighbourhood data for the Maple Falls area pulled 2026-10-09, describing the surrounding rental market and not our two cabins; vendor analytics are restated from run to run. Booking-window figures come from our own 403 completed stays. We could not confirm whether Whatcom County school districts close on January 18, 2027, so no claim about local school holidays appears above.
